Here’s the problem:
- The majority of home and small business computers are infected with some kind of virus, spyware or other malware
- Many of the owners of these computers falsely think everything is fine
- Many computers have no anti-virus program, or it’s out of date, or it doesn’t update automatically
- Even more have no protection or ineffective protection against spyware, trogans, keyloggers and other insidious nasties
- Many have an ineffective firewall or no firewall (the XP firewall isn’t good enough)
- Internet Explorer is hijacked in many cases
- Windows not updated posing a security threat
- A corrupted or fragmented registry causing instability and slow performance
- A badly fragmented hard disk causing slow operation
- Huge number of temporary files causing slow operation
- No backups
- Applications with vulnerabilities posing a security threat
- Ineffective hard disk structure causing slow operation
- And many, many other problems.
A survey done a few years ago revealed that a staggering 85% of home and small business computers were infected with some kind of malware that was potentially harmful. This included computers maintained by IT professionals whose belief was that the computers were clean. Awareness of viruses in particular has increased markedly since then, but other malware has become even more insidious. From business clients we visit as part of our consulting activities, we believe the above figures to still hold true. Even if the computers are essentially free of malware, there are often other issues causing slow and inefficient operation or areas where vulnerabilities exist, posing a security threat to the business.
Here’s the Solution:
The solution is to install a modern Internet Security program or suite of programs, and to vigilantly watch to make sure they are updated; to check that Windows has had its security patches applied; to check that any installed applications with vulnerabilities have been updated; to check the registry for problems and fix them; to delete temporary files and cookies; to defragment the hard disk regularly (but not too regularly); and so on.
Some of this can be automated to some degree, but you don’t want the computer running scans everyday because of undue wear to the hard disk, and running scans during the work day slows the computer down substantially. Other things can’t be automated, and the person doing the checking needs to know what they’re doing to be effective. It can waste a lot of valuable and expensive employee time, and seriously decrease workplace productivity.
Here’s our deal:
For a super-low fee, we’ll connect to your computer via an encrypted secure website and perform all the necessary tasks mentioned above.
We’ll fix things as we go, and give you a report at the end of what we’ve done and what still needs doing. Typically, we spend an average of 5 hours on each computer, often more. We systematically follow a comprehensive 7-point ‘computer tuneup’ checklist that we’ve used successfully with many business clients for many years. In most cases we’re able to fix everything in one session. Windows being what it is though, and depending on what maintenance (if any) has been performed in the past, there might be something that can’t be completed remotely, or requires another session. We’ll let you know.
