A business website that no-one finds is of limited usefulness.

Sure, you can tell your existing customers to have a look, but ideally you want the search engines to find your site and have it appear in the first few pages of results when a potential client searches for your business name, product, or service.

The process of making a website search-engine friendly in such a way that you benefit is called ‘Search Engine Optimisation’.

Let’s say you have a business called ‘Business Directions Online’.  You have existing clients who may want to contact you from time to time, or find out if you have any awesome new products.  They might have bookmarked your site, but more than likely they’ll just type in your business name into Google or their favourite search engine.  Anything you can do to make it easier for them to find you has to be a Good Thing.  If your website appears on the first page of the search engine results, that is in the first ten listings, your client can quickly and easily find it.  If they have to spend time looking for it on subsequent pages, they may not bother.

What if someone is looking to buy a product or service you sell, but don’t already know you?

They’ll search on the name of the product or its function, rather than your business name.  In such cases, your website needs to be optimised for the product so that the search engines will return your site in the listings when someone does a search for that product.   That’s harder than getting listed for a business name usually, because of far greater competition.

There are things that can be done on websites to have them rank much higher for your chosen terms, though.  Search Engine Optimisation entails various on-page and off-page factors.   Some are simple to do and others take time.
